There’s a girl who lives near me who always try to greet me in English. But she usually speaks so fast that I can’t even respond before she responds thinking that I asked her how she’s doing. I think she probably has the greeting memorized. It’s so funny. My encounters with her usually leave me a little bit fazed. Anyways, I’m going to start referring to her as the “hello.howareyou.fine” girl since I don’t know her name.
So it seems like the cool thing to do for the college girls in this city is to join our Girls’ Mentoring Center. The other morning, about five girls and a mom stopped by my house to see if they could sign up. (SIDE NOTE: it is very easy to find where foreigners live in this country. All you have to do is ask and someone will direct you to the right house.) I had to tell them “no” because we don’t have enough space. I feel bad doing it but there’s nothing I can do about it. Anyways, I later saw the mom an hour or so later at the water company. Again, she asked if her daughter can participate. I told her that we can put her daughter on the waiting list. We were told by second year volunteers that girls often stop participating after a few sessions.
I never expected to teach, even less so to teach in French or teach French to other people. I told my recruiter, when I was applying, that I didn’t want teach. However, as it turned out I am doing both. It’s quite funny because my French, while is improving dramatically, is not that great.
