no gas = no bath

Rumor has it that the gas company (that supplies most of the gas for cooking, etc…) left Mauritania a month or so ago. We were told by other volunteers (from Nouakchott, when they were up here for Thanksgiving) that the gas company refused to comply with the junta’s demand to lower the price of gas and they left. So there’s no gas. Most Mauritanians do not seem to be concerned though – everyone is saying that they’ll be gas soon. In the mean time, they’re using coal instead – if they ran out gas. I still have a big tank of gas but I’m trying to conserve it so that I won’t have to use coal to heat up my water in order to take a bath. Since it’s really cold now (60 – 70 degrees; trust me, it’s COLD) I have to heat up my water in order to bathe. I think it’s more important that I take a bath instead of using the gas to cook since I can buy food.

Anyways, good thing I’m leaving next week. I hope that by the time we get back there will be gas. In other news, the military junta visited Atar last week to talk about the “state of democracy” (as the signs around town said). I don’t know if it was a big deal or not but I didn’t hear anyone talk about it.
