Teacher Appreciation Day

Last Tuesday we celebrated the first Teacher Appreciation Day in Mauritania. Mark and I thought it would be a great idea to introduce the idea to remind students that becoming a teacher is a choice. Thus, they should appreciate their teachers for all their hard work. Furthermore, we wanted to recognize all the work that teachers do for their students especially since they hardly ever get any recognitions.
We had the college and lycee GMC girls and the college English club girls make posters to put up in each classroom at the college and lycee. The evening before, Mark, Aly and I pulled an all-nighter in order to bake 8 batches of cookies for the teachers. We were not planning on pulling an all-nighter but since the electricity went out at 7pm and did not come back on until 11pm, we had no other choice.
Even though we only slept for two hours, it was totally worth it. The teachers and administration absolutely loved it! I think this event was the best thing I’ve done since being here. We received so many “thank you’s” and expression of appreciation.
